Psalm 139
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
This Psalm is about God being omnipresence (all knowing) and omniscience (all powerful). He sees all and knows all about us! v4 says "not a word in my tongue", that He doesn't know. We cannot hide anything from our merciful Savior. He has perfect knowledge of all our thoughts, actions, and words.
Where can we go from His spirit? Can we flee from His presence? Where shall we go where He is not there? This is comforting to those who love Him. Fearful to those who do not and live in willful sin. The Psalmist highlights that God's presence is inescapable! It would be fruitless to try to escape or hide as Adam and Eve did. Whether it be in heaven or hell God is there. Meaning He is in all parts of the earth. The reference to hell could also mean our trials and tribulations. Even in our lowest state He is there. God's light shines through all the darkness in our lives (John 1:5). Providing comfort and hope.
The wings of the morning, in the morning the sun rises, and spreads across the earth. Illuminating every corner. The Psalmist is acknowledging that God is omnipresent as the morning light. He can reach every part of a person's heart. This verse shows the wide expansiveness of God's presence! Enveloping us in His love.
Even in the uttermost parts of the sea further emphasizes God is everywhere. The sea is vast and deep. David is stating that even in the remote places God is still present.
His right hand shall hold us! v5 says He "besets" us. Means to surround, to press on all sides. And David says He "laid thine hand upon me". This signifies how personal the Lord is with us. He is intimately involved in our lives. We are protected, encompassed by His hand. He guides our every step. And we are perfectly known by Him. This is God's love for us who truly follow, obey and love Him with all their hearts! As the Psalmist did. May we never desire to go away from His presence! David asked in v7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? The answer is since God is omnipresent there is nowhere to hide! His eyes "are in every place, beholding the evil and the good." (Proverbs 15:3). Nothing is ever hidden from the Lord! Nothing! Let us stand in reverential awe of God that He is an all-knowing Lord. This can be terrifying or wonderful. If our hearts are open to Him and nothing hidden, we will delight in how much He encircles us with His love.
